The World Roller Games 2019 will bring together 11 roller sports disciplines in Barcelona and four subvenues, which is a record number of specialities compared to the previous edition of Nanjing 2017. Scooter was not present at the event that was staged in the Chinese city, but it now joins the programme to provide an extra dose of spectacle for fans, and the same goes for Roller Derby, which will now be staged in the men’s category.
Broadly speaking, the presence of Scooter and men’s Roller Derby, a competition in which only women competed in Nanjing, are two of the main new disciplines in the WRG2019, which are set to take place in Barcelona and its four subvenues from 4 to 14 July. The Scooter championships will be held at Palau Sant Jordi between 5 and 7 July, while Roller Derby will take place at Pavelló Municipal d’Esports Riera Seca in Mollet del Vallès between 9 and 13 July.
There are also slight variations in other modalities when it comes to programmes or name changes of competitions, such as in Rink Hockey. The previous designations of FIRS Cup and Confederation Cup have now made way for Intercontinental Championship and Challenger’s Championship, while the U20 competition is now U19.
Skateboarding and Street Luge are also new competition events in the discipline of Downhill, given that were only held in the discipline of Inline in Nanjing 2017. Street competition events are also making a debut in the discipline of Skateboarding.
