The first edition of the World Roller Games – FIRS World Championships has seen an intense fourth competition day, during which the teams competing in the semi-finals of the women’s rink hockey world title have already been decided. A penultimate round that the Spanish national rink hockey team will be a part of as it steadily advances to defending its world title, having already qualified today for the semis, in which it will come up against Chile (10.30am Spanish time). The other semi-final will feature Germany, which beat Italy 3-0, and Argentina, which dominated the USA 10-0.
The Spanish team led by Natasha Lee has already demonstrated its potential by thrashing Germany, the USA and France and added a hard-fought victory today against Portugal (1-4). With barely a rest, the team will compete tomorrow to qualify for the final in the first edition of the World Roller Games. “We knew we were up for a difficult match against Portugal, but we are now already planning for tomorrow and our match against Chile, a team that has been steadily improving in their matches here in Nanjing. Now we have to analyse their game and tomorrow we will go flat out and remain true to our philosophy, because that is how we want to reach the final and win,” explained the Spanish captain, whose team has already racked up the European Championship 2015 and World Championship 2016.
The Spanish squad is one of the strong favourites to go down in history as the first world champion in the World Roller Games, a new competition format promoted by the FIRS that combines the World Championships of all roller sports disciplines and whose second edition will be held in Barcelona in 2019. “We are very excited that the second edition will be held in Barcelona, because it is a city that is committed to our sport. We really want to perform well in Nanjing and be able to enjoy what I am sure will be a fantastic World Roller Games in Barcelona,” the Spanish team captain added.
The highlights of tomorrow’s competition session will be the women’s rink hockey semi-finals and commencement of such spectacular disciplines as Artistic Skating and Roller Freestyle, both of which will conduct their first training sessions.
