America has a clear goal in mind at the World Roller Games 2019: to conquer the Inline Hockey world title. And to do so, the Americans have formed a star-studded team that includes some of the world’s best players.
In fact, the Americans have already announced their team lists for Barcelona 2019 in both the men’s and women’s categories. Many of the team members are professionals playing in the US and some have even had forays into Europe.
The latter is the case, for example, of Junior Cadiz, who has played for several French and Spanish teams (Valladolid and Mallorca), Nathan Sigmund, who has been coach and player of the Valladolid inline skating club, or PJ DiMartino, currently in the squad of HC Rubí Cent Patins.
Both the American men’s and women’s teams have undoubtedly been formed to win gold at the WRG 2019. This, coupled with the fact that they have announced their squads so far in advance, will cause other national teams to call on their best players in order to compete with the American stars.
Among the more than 30 teams that will be present in Barcelona, representing the largest participation in the history of the competition so far, the Americans biggest rivals will be countries such as the Czech Republic, France, Canada, Switzerland and Italy.
It is worth recalling that there had been two Inline Hockey World Championship until 2017: FIRS (Fédération Internationale de Roller Sports) and IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation). The former, now organised by World Skate, is the title that has lasted and will be held this summer in Barcelona as part of the World Roller Games.
During the last edition in Nanjing 2017, the American men’s team competed with a completely different team of players and only managed to finish ninth, after only two months previously having won its seventh IIHF World Championship. The Americans will try to get rid of this thorn in their side and win the title with the help of their stars in Barcelona this year. Regarding the American women’s team, gold in Nanjing and in the last World Cup of Asiago 2018 show that it will once again be the team to beat at the WRG 2019.
The Inline Hockey World Championship will be held at CEM Horta and CEM Mar Bella in Barcelona from 6 to 13 July. Just before the start of the World Roller Games 2019, specifically from 26 June to 4 July, these same venues will host the World Junior Championship of this discipline in both the junior men’s and women’s category.
